probably a dumb question but I've been setting up my community for a few days and I want to make sure everything looks right before anyone else sees it. is there a preview mode or do I just keep it private until I'm ready?

Not a dumb question at all! Your community is completely private until you flip the public toggle in settings. Search engines can't see it, it won't show up in the discover page, and only people you explicitly invite can access it.
When you're ready, just flip the switch and you're live.

Marcus is right. Also pro tip: you can invite beta testers with the invite link system — generate a link in Settings → Invitations, send it to a few people, and get feedback before going public. The link can be set to expire after a certain number of uses.
